I doubt if there is any "one single" reference. I'm a beginner too and the stuff about Avalon is a little scattered around. And many times you would learn that the things you have just learnt have been deprecated. If you haven't read the "Developing with Avalon" article on the website then do that. But let me warn that the article ( the last time I looked at it)mentions Excalibur and some other stuff which is now deprecated. So just consider it a conceptual overview. I spent days and days to figure out which container to use but now there is stuff in the wiki about which container to use, that would help you. My personal suggestion is that just jump on to Merlin. Cause that's where Avalon is moving towards and so unless you have other specific reasons to consider Fortress, Excalibur or Phoenix containers, forget all of them and start with Merlin. I suggest you get the Merlin jars and work out the examples first using the tutorial on the site. Those examples are simple and would give u an idea about what to look for and ask in the list. Also there is a good web-server example available. Then if you want to do the source build, try it and ask questions. This list's archive has tons of good information and the Avalon guys are pretty helpful regarding answering questions. So I suggest just get an idea about IOC and components and jump to Merlin.
