I don't really think you have a bug in the shell. I have seen this before (not in Avalon but elsewhere), and I vaguely remember it to boil down to 'character incompatibilities' induced by "something". Whether that was Ant's tar, CVS or something else, I just can't remember (and it is like 1-2 years back). If you create the line again in the script file from vi or equiv., I suspect it will work.
