Merlin's references to the jar file it uses is contained in the file merlin-impl-3.3.0.jar.meta (which you can find in merlin's system directory).
This file contains the following relevant entries
avalon.artifact.dependency.api.7 = xml-apis:xml-apis;2.0.2 avalon.artifact.dependency.api.8 = xml-apis:xmlParserAPIs;2.0.2 avalon.artifact.dependency.10 = xerces:xerces;2.4.0
It seems to me that you could try tweaking something here.
