For the record, I chatted with Dave on IRC to sort the misunderstanding out. Most importantly, Dave was under the impression that the LifeCycle interfaces were driving the entire execution of the code, hence the execute() was the entry point in components. Once that was sorted out, I think the coin finally fell down...
