It's a long story. :)  Niclas or Stephen may want to fill in the details.

Avalon originally used Ant.  But that became very complicated so we moved to
Maven.  At the time Maven wasn't nearly as stable as it is now and while it
was an improvement on the situation we had with Ant, we encountered a whole
number of other problems.  So when we moved from CVS to SVN we redid our
build system and created Magic -- another Ant based system.

If the Merlin TLP proposal is approved, then Magic will move with Merlin
into the new Metro project.  At that point Avalon will be dealing with a
much simpler code base and perhaps we could switch back to Maven or some
other build system flavor of the week. :)
