Is there a page that summarizes the current Merlin/Avalon roadmap?
The main page I found was:
http://wiki.apache.org/avalon/AvalonRoadmap
However, it doesn't have a reference to the console facility referred below (for instance).
I could not find any roadmap specifics from the http://avalon.apache.org/ starting point, only the history part.

There are things in the pipeline that will change this - namely some work on a console facility that enabling remote control over the kernel via command components (e.g. hot block deployment, component reconfiguration, etc.). You can do a lot of this already if you're in control of an embedded kernel - but the console stuff will make this a lot easier.
