It does hurt, for 2 reasons:
a) Some sites make actually right decisions based on the UA, and faking 
it will break stuff
b) it makes it look as if netscape 4.x or MSIE had more market share, 
which is very bad, because sites will often be designed for the biggest 
browser :-(.
