BTW you had me confused a bit there. At first read I thought you wanted to do the XML equivalent of <endpoint id="abc" uri="file://whatnot"/> i.e. really to define endpoints by ID. However what you really want to do is put IDs on the route & steps (from/to) within the route. Just out of interest why do you want to do that?
