cloudstack is an all in one solution but doesnt limit you to one type of technology or topology. It works in conjunction with system (appliance) vm's. The three types of system vm's are console proxy vm, secondary storage vm, and virtual router vms' (each of these "router vm's" provide a multitude of services).
as for security; on the networking side, cloudstack isolates vm's in a few ways. Two of which are VLAN isolation and another is L3 segregation.
