### Typical Real-World KVM Combinations for Apache CloudStack (2025–2026)
| Distribution | Release | libvirt | QEMU
| Recommended CloudStack Versions | Notes / Known Limitations

| Ubuntu Server | 24.04 LTS | 10.0 | 8.2.2
| | Modern stack, **UEFI live snapshot
limitation (disk+memory)**: Fails on libvirt 10.0 with "Operation not
supported: internal snapshots of a VM with pflash based firmware are not
supported". Workaround: Disable memory snapshot for running instances; full
support in libvirt 10.9+. See [Discussion
#12427](https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/discussions/12427)<br>**Severe
agent performance degradation over time**: Thread leak in libvirt storage pool
handling (affected: libvirt 10.0–10.4); causes slowdowns in VM ops, high CPU,
needs frequent restarts or config tweaks (reduce agent threads, increase usage
metric interval to hours). Fixed in libvirt 10.6+ (e.g. 10.6.0-1ubuntu3.3 works
well). Highly recommended to use patched/backported libvirt or wait for Ubuntu
fix. See [Discussion

| Debian | 12 (Bookworm) | |
| | Solid choice, but fewer community
tests than Rocky/AlmaLinux |
| Debian | 13 (Trixie) | ~11.3 | ~10.0
| | Modern & stable (released Aug 2025,
point releases ongoing). Excellent for new features (better UEFI, virtio,
performance). Officially "expected to work" like Ubuntu/Debian 12. Community
confirms good KVM host support with minor tweaks (e.g. JDK for mgmt server).
Potential early-adopter issues similar to Ubuntu 24.04 (snapshots/agent
threads) — but libvirt 11.x should avoid most known bugs. Fewer large-scale
tests vs. Rocky 9. See GitHub
[#12374](https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues/12374) for tracking.
**Recommended for new deployments wanting cutting-edge stack.** |
