Hi all,

A short heads-up for anyone moving VMs from VMware to KVM, and a request
for testers.
Full disclosure first: this is my own project, not an Apache CloudStack one.

Since CloudStack 4.22.1.0, the VMware-to-KVM import can read the source
disks through VMware's VDDK
(virt-v2v with nbdkit's VDDK plugin) for cold migrations. The next release,
CloudStack 24.0, adds warm
migrations as well: VDDK with Changed Block Tracking, into NFS, Ceph RBD
and LINSTOR primary storage (already
merged on main). With VDDK no longer available for public download, getting
a copy has become a problem for
many people.

OpenVDDK is a library I wrote that implements the same interface: the same
file name
(libvixDiskLib.so.8), the same API and the same error codes, so nbdkit,
virt-v2v and similar tools use it
without being rebuilt. It reads over HotAdd, NBDSSL and NBD, on Linux
x86-64, from vSphere 6.7 to 8.0.

- It is free, and it will stay free.
- The code is intended to be published under an open-source licence.
- Right now it is in a private beta. Testers get an evaluation kit with the
library, documentation and a
list of the known differences from VMware's library.

If you'd like to try it, in a lab or in your own import pipeline, you can
sign up at https://openvddk.com.
Questions and results are welcome on or off the list.

Thanks,
Andrija
