It says you should know :- * XML, XML Namespaces * Basics of XPath, XSLT * Java language * Servlets, HTTP
HTTP compression was a recommendation of HTTP 1.1 protocol specificatiion. HTTP compression helps with speed of web delivery. I was referring to Juraj Lenharcik's website (http://www.t-systems.com) I noticed that it was a bit slow.
Putting Apache before the servlet container has nothing to do with it.
It is a concern if you want to make it a concern and not a concern if you are not
interested in making it concern.
Putting it bluntly It is an option and not a mandatory requirement.

As far as I understand, it is recommended to use Apache in front of your servlet container to implement http compression. HTTP compression is not Cocoon's concern.
