The explanation given here is *not* an explanation at all - not all of us are subscribers to the developers list and so are not party to the discussions that prompted this decision - perhaps one of the developers can summarise the issues and update the website - then the rest of us can have a chance to comment.
To be clear, this move was made in response to user feedback on the following issues as I remember it: - stripping cocoon down to a usable state for the average user was _very_ difficult. It could not (and still cannot - until real blocks) be done without building from source and needed to be done by everyone who wanted to use it. Today, building from source is _significantly_ easier than it used to be to attempt to strip down a binary release. - there were some JDK dependencies that necessitated two separate binary distributions. many people were tripped up by this (and still are with the 2.0 line) - the build became drop-dead easy. Ant is included, no classpath is needed. one command line which can be cut and pasted from the instructions and you're done. (unless you're using jdk 1.4 and tomcat, but that's a universal issue)
PS If you do decide to not release a binary verrsion, then
you certainly should remove the link to the Binary distributions archive (link on this page)
Why? If you are looking for binary or source releases of previous versions how are you supposed to find them if we remove the links from the download page?
