it is activated by default if the corresponding block was compiled, and uses a port.

If that's the problem, you should see an exception saying "port is already in use" or something in the tomcat or Cocoon logs when the second instance of Cocoon starts.


You can try to disable it by commenting the hsql config section out of cocoon.xconf (actually, maybe it's only in cocoon.roles? that'd be harder) in one of (or both if you don't need the database samples running) the cocoon instances.
