Create, retrieve, update, delete xmldb database using woody?

Redundant disclaimer: I'm pretty new at this ... ;-)  If I combine the 
XML binding in
samples/woody with samples/xmldb into a document database application, 
are the
database actions best done in the flowscript or in the sitemap?  Is that 
even a
meaningful question?  Is there an 'elegant' preferred practice?  
Explicit code
snippets would be invaulable.  

I am presently using a dev snapshot: cocoon-2.1_20031216111321.tar.gz.
