Assignment generally evaluates to true.

I know I've read about this somewhere but I can't find it any 
more. When I
run the flowscript below I see the result of the last print() 
statement, but
cocoon does not proceed to execute the pipeline, instead I 
get a blank page
with a continuation ID as URL. What is wrong?
