all is working properly now. i re-checked the web.xml file and discovered that <param-name>load-class</param-name> section had been specified 2 times in the document. I removed one instance and everything is working fine now. Thank you again for your help.
Final question, are there any editor specifically for cocoon availale?
If you're used to Eclipse (http://ww.eclipse.org) you may try the SunBow plugin (http://radio.weblogs.com/0108489/).
Anyway, a decent XML editor will do: I use Oxygen (http://www.oxygenxml.com/) under Eclipse.
