does this make the link unusable ? (just curious)

And, when rendered in a browser, the underlining of the hyperlink will extend a little past the end of the linked text.
Maybe some of your input data has trailing newlines onto it, you could fix this in the stylesheet with a <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/> at the top.
