you normally get other exceptions like ClassCastException or NoSuchMethodException.
Now I remember I also had this error message once with the the cocoon 2.04 binary
distribution. I then built my own .war file from the 2.1.4 source distribution which
worked fine. Maybe you should try that if you're stuck.

I have the same problem with ParanoidCocoonServlet, the same error. And when I define paranoid-classpath or extra-classpath in my web.xml configuration file, files of my cocoon directory are just list by tomcat.
