In this case the problem was that the User.hbm.xml
file was referring to a
<!DOCTYPE hibernate-mapping PUBLIC ...
and my development machine was not on the network.

I'm sorry: I solved this nuisance last month but wasn't smart enough to figure out this might have been your problem :(
