I'm not the authority, but I would venture to say that neither one is going to away. The <fd:javascript> way I think is the older way. I don't care for it, because I like the declarative style of the form definition and I don't like embedding imperative code in it.
I think there's a third way... I think you can implement the validation code right in the flowscript, if that suits you. Can't remember the details ATM — check the v2 samples in the forms block I think.
