1) The "Home Edition" of XMLSpy is free. www.altova.com. Windows-only.
2) I modified Jaxe (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jaxe/) into a java
webstart application so you can use it as a downloadable "client side"
editor in combination with Cocoon (see the Wiki page).
