The funny thing was, I thought this server had the 1.4.2 JVM, and then right before posting my question I thought to confirm it (esp. since my post concerned a JVM problem) and that's when I discovered it was 1.4.1. I'm working w/ the admin to schedule an upgrade to 1.4.2.
The ImageReader source contains a very well-document workaround for an old bug in Sun's JPEG codec... don't know if that's the one you were thinking of. I doubt that's my problem, because (a) ImageReader works around it, and (b) that problem occurred in the event of a peer connection reset, whereas for me the JVM simply crashes whenever com.sun.image.codec.jpeg.JPEGImageDecoder.decodeAsBufferedImage() is called (when the JVM was started by supervise, that is...)
