You should have a pipeline which takes the search parameters and generates an HTML page with your "please wait" notice, and an HTTP refresh META tag in the HTML head, which would contain a URL pointing at the real search results pipeline. So this first HTML page would return to the browser immediately, replacing the form page, and the browser would display it while waiting for the results page.
