After further checking, i found out that cocoon must be compiled with mail.jar and activation.jar in the local/lib folder of the distribution. Copying them to the server is not enough.

I just checked on the server, the 2 files are in the /usr/local/resin/lib folder
Anyway, if i remember, i think the error you get when theses files are missing is a ClassNotFound exception.

I understand that the lookup of the class fails, but i don 't undestand why.

-the cocoon-mail-block.jar is in the lib folder

-the cocoon.xconf include the definition of the built in xsl stylesheet

do i need anything else ?

Mail.jar and activation.jar, from Sun's JavaMail and Java Activation Framework, possibly. They are not distributed with Cocoon for licensing reasons.
