Advantages to building on 1.5 etc.

I've been watching this list and reading Cocoon docs, but I have a 
couple of questions that are not explicitely addressed in a way that I 
understand:
1) Is there any distinct advantage to building Cocoon with java 1.5 
over 1.4?
In other words, if I build Cocoon with 1.4 on my Mac and deploy it on 
my Linux server running java 1.5 (with Tomcat 5.5.x if that matters) am 
I going to take a hit on performance, functionality etc?
2) What specific purpose is behind incorporating blocks in a Cocoon 
build? If I just add the required jars etc. along with making the 
appropriate code changes in config files and so forth, what have I lost 
in the process? Or, what do I gain by trying to incorporate it as a 
block?
