Using > < in SQL

Hi,
I am using the SQL transformer, and I generate the query using XSL,
so I use > and < in the XSL, however when this is passed to the 
SQL transformer
the query still contains > < (though interestingly not " 
which is printed as ") is
there a way to force this to be printed as '>' and '<' when the query is 
made?
