I wouldn't say JSR-168 portlet integration is unstable. Perhaps
incomplete would be better. Every JSR-168 portlet I have tried works
fine, but that doesn't mean that every portlet you may find or write
will. However, if you find a scenario that doesn't work it should be
reported as a bug.
