Thanks for the help.

However I was unable to use xslt within the CDATA section. I therefore did not use a CDATA section, but escaped all "<" in the HTML with "&lt;" and embedded normal xslt within the HTML, ie without escaping the xslt's "<". This worked OK

Yup, that's what you have to do.  SendMailTransformer is crazy that way.
