Turns out that it's the JDK (Version 1.5.0_06-b05) that has issues with compiling the code. So I went back to 1.5.0_02 and it compiled successfully.

FWIW, I just did a successful full build of the current SVN code using
JDK 1.5.0_06 on MacOSX.
