XSP still works as well as ever, but most people don't use it anymore
for new projects, preferring to use java and/or flowscript.

There are still people using XSP and maintaining it, so it's not dead,
but it's got IMHO a smaller community than other parts of Cocoon.

ESQL is probably the best reason to use XSP, to do SQL "without programming".

Sorry if this doesn't help much...the best might be to compare the
different techniques on one of your use cases, and go for what feels
right. None of these components are "wrong" to use.
