For a client we created a Cocoon RESTTransformer to use the HTTP methods POST, PUT, DELETE, GET. It is in http://code.google.com/p/cocooncomponents/. So we use Cocoon pipelines to transform the original XML document to a Solr input document and then use the RESTTransformer to "give" it to Solr.
