I had a look at the following repository location:

m/continuum-parent/1-SNAPSHOT/
And I can see files like:
continuum-parent-1-20080304.221528-1.pom
continuum-parent-1-20080304.221842-1.pom
Is the suffix "-20080304.221528-1" some sort of classifier?

copy so I have revision 661764.
If I retain the <parent> element, then mvn clean fails with the

Changing the version of the parent pom to "2" and "2-SNAPSHOT" does not
make a difference, except that the error reports the new version number
as being not found.
If I remove the <parent> element then mvn clean gets much further, but
eventually fails with the following:
