I'm having problems getting the X server from pkgsrc/x11/xorg-server working on my ThinkPad X20. After building and installing the server, client, font, and library packages, I tested the server by just typing 'X' at a shell prompt (as root). I had my working /etc/X11/xorg.conf from my ports/dfports xorg installation still in place and a symbolic link of /usr/X11R6 -> /usr/pkg/xorg. The server started but displayed nothing, no screen full of alternating black/white pixels, no mouse pointer, nothing. (More complex methods of starting the server, such as xdm, yielded the same results.) I ran xorgconfig to get a new xorg.conf, entering the same information as I did under ports, same results.
My ThinkPad X20 has an ATI Rage Mobility with 4MB of VRAM, and the LCD is capable of 1024x768. There are a lot of messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about "panel dimensions exceeded" and such. I had this same problem last time I tried to use pkgsrc for X (either an earlier -PREVIEW or else 1.2.x-RELEASE) and gave up in favour of ports. I obtained pkgsrc via anoncvs from anoncvs.us.netbsd.org yesterday, and I applied Joerg's pkgsrc.diff before bootstrapping or building anything. X.org packages built: xorg-clients-6.8.2 xorg-dirs-1.1nb1 xorg-fonts100dpi-6.8.2 xorg-fonts75dpi-6.8.2 xorg-fontsEncodings-6.8.2 xorg-fontsMisc-6.8.2 xorg-fontsTruetype-6.8.2 xorg-fontsType1-6.8.2 xorg-imake-6.8.2nb2 xorg-libs-6.8.2nb1 xorg-server-6.8.2nb2 My /var/log/Xorg.log.0 and /etc/X11/xorg.conf are posted at http://web.mr-happy.com/~jfb/df/ for anyone who would like to look them over. I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer. thanks, Jeff
