Maybe a missing RPATH. Which specific program had the problem from the 
pkgsrc packages (since there are a lot of xfce packages and programs)? 
(Run objdump -x on it.)

As for the ./configure error, have a look at the config.log to see the 
problem why the compiler is unable to create executables.
