If video playback doesn't work, the first thing to check is whether hardware acceleration for video playback works. Use the "xvinfo" command and check the output. If it says "no adaptors present", then hardware acceleration is not available from your graphics driver, which means that the main processor has to do all the work of scaling, color conversion, resampling etc., which can lead to skipping frames.
