It could. Dunno if Unix will even (still) DO this, but OS/2 was happy as a clam running 'ethernet protocol' point-to-point between two boxes. No need for the higher-level TCP/IP 'layer'.
Lean, mean, and fast, but had to have manual routing set up. Bill
