I am not purposefully trying to be difficult, but rather trying to understand.

My thinking that having the mirroring within the filesystem, combined with the reblocking code, hot swap (connect/disconnect) and the smart mountpoints would actually be a very smooth experience also in single-server configurations.

Ah, there always /is/ hardware RAID. Maybe that would still just be the way to go.
