Maybe you should try no-gui DFBSD image, perhaps in VirtualBox (?) - it works fine on Mac OS X.
That way, you can install & configure all your needed stuff from the ground up (xorg, window manager, pkgsrc etc.) and copy most config files on your real DF system.
