Still the same problem here, the server is trying to resend to an unusable

Presumably you've retsarted the server also, since updating the client
config? Otherwise it would still have the old responses in its resend queue.
Also, make sure the conduit name in your config is correct:
<http:conduit name="{
http://backend.vdc.redhat.com/}WCFBackendBeanPort.http-conduit<http://backend.vdc.redhat.com/%7DWCFBackendBeanPort.http-conduit>
">
i.e. ensure that it lines up with the namespace and port defined in your
WSDL. For example, the trailing forward slash in the namespace of the
conduit QName (i.e.
{http://backend.vdc.redhat.com*/*<http://backend.vdc.redhat.com/%7DWCFBackendBeanPort.http-conduit>}
) looks a tad odd.
This matches what I have in the WSDL:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<definitions targetNamespace="http://backend.vdc.redhat.com/"
name="BareBackendBean" xmlns:tns="http://backend.vdc.redhat.com/"....
and it is that way only becuase that is what the jbossws-cxf auto-wsdl
gives me. Could the trailing slash be an issue?

No.. it was not. I added shutdown(true) and I still get the stack traces:
