No you are not unrealistic. I am doing it and I don't have any annotations in
my code.
I am sorry that I can't give you one more concrete advise but the spring
configuration is painful and the whole java paradigm doesn't lend it self to
nice howtos.
You have to fight through the logs. The people here are very helpful indeed
and may be able to help if you post some simple code and you config files
web.xml etc...
