While I agree with that, there is one option you COULD do, but it would be a bit more complex. You could use the CXF continuations with a timeout. In you impl bean, you would push the 'real' work onto an executor or similar, then create a continuation and use that. Your impl would be called again when the timeout occurs and you could throw a fault from that. That doesn't stop your logic from running on the other thread, you would still need to manage that.
