we are actually using clustering but I think Tomcat can be configured in clusters. We are using JPA and EJB classes, but again OpenEJB and OpenJPA are there to solve the problem. I wonder is starting with Tomcat and add components you really need as the project grows is the way to go. We started with a WebSphere 7 and we are trying to scale it down to shave off ws classes and jars....not going very well at all.
