Here you need to think like a novice not an expert.
Simply placed with my luck I will do something which I do not know how to fix
that will crash the system. This happens so regularly that I have long since
realized that any data I place in the same partition with the system I will
loose when I repair the system by re-installation. Re installation has proved
to be much easier than attempting to solve some of my screw up which I am
sure anyone on the BB could and would fix in under 5 minutes if and that is a
big if the were unfortunate enough to mack such an error to began with. I
will give you an example. A number of weeks ago and continuing for quite a
few weeks playing around with MySQL and OO I created a number of MySQL and
dBase DBs entitled test1,testxx, and so on quite a simply forgot where I
placed them. So, if one forgets where a file is one searched. Opening old MC
I entered 'test*' as a search parameter. Final results "good by HD'. It is
now sitting here on my desk as a very nice paper weight which since I have
always wanted to know what was inside I will maybe dissemble it to see what
I can see because that and a paper weight or a spacer to balance out the
cracked ledge of a bad table is all it is good for. That is the worst one I
have had happen. Loose systems. How often do I play? Not as much now as
before as I lost my spare HD. Reality_Check, got its Commic Book name simply
because of my exploits, has a drawer in it for HD and I had three now two
drawers with systems installed that I used for testing. The current second
draw has an old RH 7.0 system on it with a lot of old data so it is an
archive HD not a test bead HD. The first HD as you probably guessed, the one
with MySQL in it, is a test for a planed network system so I definitely do
not play with it.
Normal computer set up for me is as follows
/boot
/
<Swap>
/Home
The above will be 5 to 8 GB depending on the HD
All other space in the HD will go into
/{DATA}
where {DATA} takes on a variety of names from
/System_Data for Reality_Check to
/home/trunk/Common_Data for the dual boot combination of Alley_Oop / Big_Nate.
Note the sequence 'A, B, C' and 'R, S'
To emphasize, when I repair a system by reloading the system taking 2 to 3
hours, I still have my data which is NOT so when I attempt repairs taking 2
to 3 weeks with always causes complete loss of data.
