The date field is kind of a legacy field, I don't expect that it will be
enhanced. Since it's also not completely i18n-aware, I suggest you use a
Formatted Field instead. You can give it a any format you like,
including a hand-crafted one: DD,MM,YYYY is possible with a formatted
field without problems.
