Although I have no idea of OO-Internals it's maybe bug in the
MySQL-JDBC-Driver which has some bugs in 3.1.10 when it comes to
encoding, collation, ... as well as MySQL 4.1 where some bugs are
targeted to 5.1. Some encoding bugs/problems are fixed in the latest
dev-snapshot http://downloads.mysql.com/snapshots.php#connector-j
