That's a strange warning. I seem to recall that it was stated that
Java 1.5 was
needed. I admit that I had problems between Java 1.5 and OOo 1.9.79
but I have
had no problems in my limited experience after I upgraded to OOo
1.9.125.
Maybe a compatibility issue has been solved?? The way I recall the
incident, my
problem was that OOo reported a corrupt version of Java 1.5 when I
attempted
to design tables with OOo 1.9.79.
If you are now able to use Java 1.5, I would like to know about it.
I removed Java 1.5 so that I would not have to worry about it. If I
remember correctly, I always crashed when I used the Form Wizard all
the way through. If the problem still exists, should probably file
an issue.
I have started my first ever database application by designing about
a half dozen tables for it. That is all the farther I have progressed
to date. IOW, I have not tried the Form Wizard. That having been
said, I did find that Java 1.5 works with the Tables Wizard since I
upgraded OOo from 1.9.79 to 1.9.125. Prior to that the Wizard choked
on Java 1.5.
I have other problems with my table design operations but I'll
address them in separate messages as I find it convenient to do so.
Also, note that I have not yet tried either RC1 or RC2 though I did
download RC1.
My background: I am a retired Univac mainframe assembly language
programmer.
The database engine that is integrated into OOo 2.xxx is HSQLDB.
The latest release of HSQLDB is 1.8.0.1 which was developed with
Java 1.4.2. The development cycle for this release had already
been in progress several months when Java 1.5 (5.0) was released.
Because the OOo team was waiting for this new release, the HSQL
team decided not to retrofit to the new Java release. Any of
the OOo betas prior to somewhere around 1.9.112 would have been
using a beta version of HSQLDB 1.8.
The fact is that HSQLDB 1.8.0.1 still has problems with Java 1.5 (5.0)
although maybe not as many as it had in some of its beta releases.
The point I am trying to make is that the announcement about
Java 1.4 being a better choice for OOo has nothing to do with
OOo itself, but rather with its integrated database engine.
BTW, I am a retired IBM mainframe assembly language programmer,
only we refer to it as assembler language.
Some people are now reporting that they have success with 1.5x and
failures with 1.4x. What a wonderful life!
