I use ms access a lot as it contains a lot of tools I have developed over the years.

I also use open office writer, and calc and their interoperability with ms access is good.

I try to use base from time to time and run into simple difficulties, and go back to using ms access

I want and application which enables me to create simple quick (and not necessarily semantically correct) tables sometimes without primary keys, to copy easily a column of data from calc to those tables.

In short I want a quick and flexible database application, not necessarily connecting to any favorite database.

Hi Keith,

First, I am not part of the development group nor had anything to do with designing Base, but would like to weigh in on this non the less.

In short I am not following you, from your description, as to the problem here. For simple quick database creation I am hard pressed to see how Base, as is, falls short. This has been my experience with it anyway.

Looking at your statement that you sometimes want to create "not necessarily semantically correct" tables, I have to ask - What do you mean? If all you mean is that you don't like having to create a primary key, OK, but look again at this. You don't have to, you do have to have one - but using the table wizard or the table designer all you need do is allow it to add one for you. This will be autoincremented and you pretty much never again need concern yourself with it.

Now lets look at the issue of moving a column from a Calc sheet to a database table.

Open the Calc file.
Starting from the main menu select 'File>New>Database>Finishded'. 'Finished', of course being a button on the database wizard page.
Enter a name for the database file.
(if windows ) ALT/TAB back to Calc.
Highlight the cells of the column you want to move to a table.
Drag it to the table icon in the Base file window, drop it there.
On the first page of the data import window slect 'Create Primary Key'.
'Finished'

That's it, that data is in a table. Again, what is the problem with the DBMS adding a Primary Key, you didn't want it so ignore it. You never need supply a value for it, the DBMS does it for you.

Seriously, how is it you do it in MS Acces, and what makes that way so much easier?

Again, I am not a developer of Base, but if you want them to address a short coming a bit more specifics here might help - for myslef, I am hard pressed to see how they could make a one time migration of a column from Calc to Base any easier. ( A caveat here regarding dates...but that is a well known issue I believe )

Sincerely,

Drew Jensen
