In the minimal for, "joining" a project simply means this project appears in the "My projects" list at the "My pages" link. Nothing more than this, since you can also participate in the project work without having formally joined it. There's a big role/privilege model with the projects, where you can request / be granted roles in different projects, which give you certain privileges. However, that's nearly all I know about it, so don't ask for details, please :). As said, if you want to participate, that's completely independent (for the beginning). If you want to provide any kind of assistance, you're highly welcome. The first thing you should ask is where your skills are - are you a developer, a technical writer, a QA person? As every OOo project, Base has more work for all categories than people being able to do it. You might want to follow some links in the "Participation" section of http://dba.opeoffice.org/, or we can discuss here in the list what you have to offer.
