And sanity./ Unfortunately, my experience of Ubuntu's 64bit AMD OOo version tallies yours, irrespective of the module (Calc, Writer, Base, Impress). The 32 bit Ubuntu compiled versions also have their numerous (and bizarre) afflictions. You can hardly blame OOo for this, blame the Ubuntu developers. However, I would agree with you that reliance on Java poses a problem for this architecture, but this is unlikely to change any time soon, in fact, it will probably increase if anything, with the new Report Builder, and other extensions being designed using Java or Java components. And yes, it would be nice to have reliable 64bit builds of official OOo for Debian, but then maybe there just aren't that many people out there building for 64 bit AMD specific architectures.
